I am so bad at keeping record. So it took me a while to trace back how I knit this little shawlette. After a few years of spinning, I have lots of various 4 oz. skeins of handspun yarns. But they are different weight and fiber content. It seems like I don’t have enough of it to knit a bigger project. However, I think I found a solution on how to use up my handspun stash yarns: knitting a shawlette
This is the first time I make my own pattern. I am sure I make a mistake and there are things I can improve on it. Any comments/suggestions are always welcome. I hope you give it a try and give me some feedback. Enjoy!

So pretty, Supisa! Congratulations on your own designs up and written out.
Thank you Julie
Does it mean that we knit two stitches for six rows? I’m dying to start this shawl and show it off to my craft goup next month
Yes. Knit 6 rows. Then knit these 2 stitches again on row 7. Do not turn but continue on to pick up 3 stitches along the side of your garter ridges. Does this make sense? Let me know if you have any problems. You should have 7 stitches on the needle (2 + 3 pick up from garter ridge + 2 transfer from undoing the waste yarn from the crochet chain).
This is a lovely pattern! As part of a project for school I’m making a not-for-official-publication book of charity knitting patterns. Could I use your pattern in it? (of course giving you the credit–I’m not a pattern stealer)
Hi Lisa. You’re welcome to include Autumn Leaf Shawl in your book. And thank you for letting me know
How many total stitches do you cast on?
Jenny
Hi Jenny. I cast on by knitting into two (2) bumps in the back of the crochet chains. If you choose another way to start, you can cast on 2 stitches.
I love the pattern! I am trying to finish it for my grandmothere for Christmas, but I am stuck transitioning from Lace B row 10 to Lace C row 1. I don’t have enough stitches to finish the repeated 10 stitches in the brackets and leave two stitches before the marker and center stitch. If I were to do a 5th repeat of B, I would have the right number of stitches to do row 1 of the B pattern again. Do you know what I have done wrong? Any help you can give me would be great! Thanks for sharing your lovely pattern.
Hi Jennifer. I am glad to hear you like the pattern
Did you trace back the last row you did and count the stitch again? May be you forgot the yarn over? My guess is that if you carefully trace back stitch by stitch, you will find out what went wrong. Let me know.
Hi Jennifer – did you get this resolved? I am at the same place as you were, and have the same problem but haven’t received a reply from Supisa yet.
Hi – I have just finished the first 18 rows (A Pattern) and am having trouble starting B Pattern. Am I supposed to repeat A Pattern? I don’t have enough stitches to start B Pattern, as far as I can tell. In other words, it says to repeat until 9 stitches before the marker but there are only 8 stitches to start with before the first marker so I am quite confused. Thanks for your help.
Hi – When you are done at row 18 (A pattern), how many stitches do you have on needle? I believe you should have 43 stitches. Please check that first and let me know?
Hmmm. I only have 39 stitches. I think I probably should just start over. It would be very helpful if the pattern included how many stitches one should have after each row, though I understand that would be a bit of extra work for you.
Also, do you keep the markers in the exact same position as you increase? They got in the way at times, like when I had to K2tog so I think perhaps I did something wrong there.
And just to be sure, does sK2p mean slip one, knit 2 together, pass slipped stich over?
Thanks for your help.
Hello again – I resolved the issue above, and am now ready to start pattern C. Like Jennifer, above, I don’t have enough stitches to do Row 1 of pattern C. I have gone back over it carefully and can’t see what the problem is. Do you have any suggestions? How many stitches should there be after doing pattern B four times?
Hi Libby. The shawl is a 4 stitches increase every other row to edging. The increases are on the right side (RS), which is the odd numbered rows. At the end of pattern A, you have 43 stitches. At the end of pattern B, you should have increase 20 stitches (5 odd numbered rows x 4-stitch increase = 20). You said that you did pattern B four times. You should have 123 stitches total (43 + (20×4)).
OK, I do have 123 stitches. However, I seem to have 2 extra stitches on each side of the center stitch when I do the first row of Chart C. I just did the math:
border= 2 stitches, then 4 stitches, then 10 stitch repeat (5 times=50), then 3 stitches to center = 59 x 2 = 118 + 1 center = 119 total. What did I do wrong?
I love the way the shawl looks so far and hope I can get over this hurdle, with your help! Thanks a lot.
Hi Libby. I am not sure what went wrong on your knitting and I am confused. You said you have 123 stitches at the end of pattern B. How did you have less stitches (119) after doing the first row of Pattern C?
Once again, I believe it’s 4 stitches increase. You should have 127 after doing the first row of pattern C and 131 sts after completing the 3rd row. Then you move on to Pattern D. I worked on this shawl a few months back and I am doing the calculation based on the pattern.
Hello again – I am sorry if I confused you – what I meant was, when I added up the stitches needed for the first row of Pattern C, I only needed 119, so I had 4 extras. I tried several times with the same result, so I just made some adjustments and went ahead. I am now starting Pattern D and have 131 stitches but again am having trouble making that work with the pattern. I can’t figure out what is wrong!
Hello again. I undid a few rows am now back again at Row 1 of Lace Pattern C. I have 123 stitches. I am in the middle of the row and have 6 stitches before the marker instead of 2. I have tried this several times and this has happened each time! Would you please try it yourself? I really need to get this lovely shawl finished soon, as it’s a birthday gift. Thanks.
Hi. Does the stitch marker bother you? If so you can try not using it. Did you do chart c just one time? The pattern calls for these 4 rows just one time. Then move on to chart D.
It’s really hard for me to know what your knitting looks like because I can’t see it. Do you have a yarn store in your area? I suggest you bring the project and talk with the store staff. They might be able to look at it and see what happened.
I don’t use the markers, actually so that’s not the issue, and I know to do pattern C just once. The problem is transitioning from pattern B to C as 123 stitches seems to be too many. The shawl looks right so far and I may be able to figure it out through trial and error; if not I agree with your suggestion to just go to my local yarn store and see if they can help. Thanks anyway – it’s hard to resolve something like this on line!
We have some confusion with Lace Pattern A. In rows 5 and 7 within the repeat you have two yo in a row. Is this correct. Is it a double wrap or a typo? Thanks!
It’s the correct yarn over as written for both rows. The idea is to make the shawl expanding into a triangle shape.
Hi, I just completed this shawl. Lovely pattern but I had the same problem transitioning from pattern B to C. It works out for me if in the last repeat of pattern B I replace row 7 with row 1 from C and row 9 with row 3 from C. Then I have the correct number for pattern D. Looking at the charts this seems to be the case as well.
Hello everyone,
I’ve updated the pattern.
- Include number of stitches at the end of pattern repeat
- Revise instruction on transitioning from pattern B to C
Thank you so much for all comments you sent me and for trying out my pattern.
Happy knitting!!!
Thank you so much for taking our comments into consideration. I will certainly make this lovely shawl again in the future….
The revised version should say that it’s updated in April, 2012. The free download is on Ravelry at http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/autumn-leaf-shawl
